On August 30th, 2014, the 8th Flower Film Festival was held in Italy. This festival, a cultural event dedicated to art in all its forms as a means of protecting nature and soil, featured short films from the 2nd International Environmental Film Festival (FINCA), which took place in Buenos Aires City from July 23rd to July 30th.

During the Flower Film Festival, three animated short films from FINCA Festival were screened: Marcel Barelli’s “Vigia” (Switzerland/France), which won the Short and Medium-Length Films Official Competition; Victoria Karmín Zárate’s “Fosca liebre” (Mexico), winner of the First Mention of the Short and Medium-Length Films Official Competition; and “Shave it” (Argentina), directed by Fernando Maldonado and Jorge Tereso.

At the festival, a tribute was made to neo-realistic scriptwriter, Cesare Zavattini, by projecting Vittorio de Sica’s “Ladrón de bicicletas” ("Bicycle Thief"), an emblematic neo-realistic film. This tribute featured the presence of Enzo Staiola, who portrayed one of the main characters during his childhood.

Several recognitions were also awarded, such as the Golden Flower Award for artistic merit, which went to Giacomo Ghiazza — in charge of storyboarding the award-winning film “Life of Pi" — and the Palladium Flower Award, awarded to Julio Santucho, President of the Instituto Multimedia DerHumALC (IMD), the organization behind FINCA and the International Human Rights Film Festival.

The award given to Santucho recognized his sensitive and selfless commitment to Human Rights, an issue that had a profound effect on him and his family during the historical context of Argentina’s dictatorship. He has spread the cries of protest of those affected by Human Rights violations not only in Argentina but also in Italy, Europe and many other nations around the world through film festivals.

“By rewarding Julio Santucho, we want to reward all people around the world who believe in the value of culture and knowledge. Films have abated insurmountable obstacles, have introduced the world to many diverse peoples and places, and have corroded dictatorships. Cinema and culture can still be effective roads to coexistence. It is enough to believe that and work for it. Just as Julio did."

The screening of FINCA films in Italy is an expression of FINCA’s intention to expand its horizons internationally, beyond its own film festival, to bring to light various issues through social and critical films with enduring messages.
