Between 1971 and 1978, Trieste was the set for an unprecedented scientific and cultural revolution led by a Venetian psychiatrist, Franco Basaglia. The city anxiously watched what was happening, carried by the enthusiasm of a group of recently qualified doctors, who transformed the city into an open-air laboratory, doing away with the mental hospital.
