The human Cost of Agrotoxins, by Pablo Piovano

Bodies, our bodies, as stripped land.
Stripped of shape, water, and life.
Gazing eyes that pierce deep into whomever sees them.
Pablo Piovano has achieved an unusually realistic depiction of the ravaged land that also became of the human beings living in terrains flooded with poisons (some of which are even banned in other countries), which make up the majority of the arable lands in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil.
Transgenic events addicted to agrotoxins invaded our lands and colonized our bodies.
That is what extractivism does: it extracts, extirpates, and expropriates... minerals, water, nutrients, life.
It does this in the mountain range, the seas, the fields, the bodies, transforming human beings into externalities.
Pablo saw it, felt it, and portrayed it.
The Human Cost of Agrotoxins should be a compulsory piece to see for those whose decisions transform humans beings into expendables.

Damián Verzeñassi. Rosario, April 2016.

Opening: Tuesday, May 31, 19 hours
The exhibition will be open until Friday 10 June 2016. Monday through Friday from 09 to 21h, Saturday from 10 to 13hs.

Panel discussion with screening “Energía Nuclear: ¿limpia y segura?” (Nuclear Energy: Clean and Safe?)

Screening: Lucens, by Marcelo Belli (7’) + La Suta: nuestro legado nuclear en un triángulo de agua (Down There: Our Nuclear Legacy in a Triangle of Water) by Daniele Gaglianone, Cristina Monti, Paolo Rapalino (68’).
Invited lecturers: Sergio Federovisky (biologist, environmental journalist, member of the Consejo Directivo de Acumar [Acumar’s Executive Council], host of Contaminación Cero [Zero Pollution], author of Argentina, de espaldas a la ecología [Argentina, with its back to ecology]), Luciana Gagliardo (specialized teacher in Human Rights, Gender and Education, President of “Conciencia Solidaria” [Solidary Awareness NGO]).

Facing the current energy demand in the region’s countries, the challenge that the development of alternative and renewable energies still represents is evident. The nuclear option, offered by the Argentine Nuclear Plan, is then consolidated as a source of power generation, considered a clean and safe alternative. However, many nations have started to examine their energy policies and to project the shutting down of nuclear power plants. The debate is still open.

Since 1997, the Instituto Multimedia DerhumALC (IMD) has been promoting films which have a critical approach and contribute to social change. We capitalized on many good and bad decisions throughout this time and keeping in mind the needs and challenges faced by socially engaged festival projects and exhibitions, the IMD decided to adapt two guides, previously made by Human Rights Film Network members, for a Latin-American audience.
Today, we are offering this space to launch the Guide and exchange knowledge for the sake of discussion with experienced festivals, with the Argentinian Network of Audiovisual Festivals and Exhibitions (RAFMA), and with all of those who are interested in learning more about the production of a film event.

The technological development, costs reduction and consolidation of a market logic promote planned obsolescence and stimulate the constant replacement of electrical and electronic equipment, generating a large amount of electronic waste. In Argentina there is no specific national law determining the procedures to be adopted to reduce the environmental impact. Given this scenario, the panel will analyze the internationally developed alternatives to overcome this problem.

Ecofeminism arises in the 70s, in the 20th century, as a new ethical and political project postulating a link between the oppression of both women and nature by capitalism, understood as a social and economic system rooted in androcentrism. it involves the participation of women in social movements and organizations in favor of food sovereignty, nature and the principle of “well-living”. This meeting aims at making visible and valuable the women’s knowledge and experience related to subsistence, so as to allow the building of sustainable alternatives centered around the reproduction of life, as well as their strategic participation in socio-environmental conflicts and the defense of their territories.

Moderator: Carlos A. Vicente (pharmacist, member of the GRAIN team in Latin America, 2011 Winner of the Right Livelihood Award: Alternative Nobel Prize, member of the Editorial Board of Biodiversity, Sustenance and Cultures, member of the Argentinian group Action for Biodiversity).

In Argentina, 60 % of the arable land is planted with GM crops and sprayed with liters and liters of glyphosate herbicides. The ‘Ley de Semillas’ (seeds law) is up for debate, threatening the rights of small-scale producers to keep, save, exchange and reproduce their own seeds. Now is the time for awareness and action. The forces and networks of farmers, doctors, environmental meetings, and other social actors have paved the way to ecological agriculture, showing that food sovereignty is possible.
